This document is the successful Waterbury, CT FY 2014 TIGER Capital Project Grant Application, submitted by the City of Waterbury. The project is now underway.

From the application: The Waterbury Active Transportation and Economic Resurgence (WATER) project is potentially the biggest catalytic project to be undertaken by the City of Waterbury in the past 50 years. WATER is a multi-faceted mobility enhancement project that will revitalize Waterbury’s river/rail corridor neighborhoods and downtown center and drive the economic resurgence of the City and region. This bold project proposes to construct an integrated system of “active transportation” improvements including: a downtown riverfront trail, a reconstructed and expanded network of local streets, and a comprehensive array of pedestrian/bicycle safety improvements and linkages, all designed to better connect downtown to the historic McKim, Mead & White designed train station and riverfront. These improvements will serve to complement on-going City and State investments in downtown revitalization, brownfield reclamation and provision of expanded transit options at the train station. WATER will benefit all of Waterbury’s 110,000 residents by improving connections between neighborhoods, jobs, schools and green spaces.

In 2018 and 2019, the Greater Waterbury Health Partnership (GWHP) assessment examined indicators related to health behaviors, chronic health conditions, and social factors.  This 2020 report is an executive summary of the full assessment, which makes extensive use of many data resources from DataHaven and other sources, including the DataHaven Community Wellbeing Survey and CDC 500 Cities program.

The findings are used to help prioritize public health issues and develop a unified community health improvement plan throughout the region. Partners in GWHP include Staywell Health center, local health districts in the Greater Waterbury area, the City of Waterbury, Waterbury Health, Trinity Health of New England, the United Way of Greater Waterbury, and the Connecticut Community Foundation.

These crosstabs contain data collected through the 2018 DataHaven Community Wellbeing Survey’s live, in-depth interviews with 16,043 randomly-selected individuals statewide including 2,319 living in the Greater Waterbury region of Connecticut (defined as 21 towns served by the Connecticut Community Foundation: Beacon Falls, Bethlehem, Bridgewater, Cheshire, Goshen, Litchfield, Middlebury, Morris, Naugatuck, New Milford, Oxford, Prospect, Roxbury, Southbury, Thomaston, Warren, Washington, Waterbury, Watertown, Wolcott, and Woodbury). These crosstabs focus on results from one geographic area; results for other areas are available via the main survey page. The survey assessed topics such as health, employment, and neighborhood resources. Respondents spanned a broad range of ages, ethnicities, and socioeconomic statuses from every Connecticut zip code, and all results are based on weighting survey data to be representative of the entire adult population (see methodology).
