This crosstab of results from the 2018 DataHaven Community Wellbeing Survey contains weighted estimates for Connecticut, as well as disaggregations for each of the Five Connecticuts.

The survey conducted in-depth interviews with over 16,000 randomly-selected adults living in every town and city throughout Connecticut.

he Five Connecticuts are a system used to classify individual towns into one of five categories (Wealthy, Suburban, Rural, Urban Periphery, and Urban Core) based on the median household income, population density, and poverty rate of each town as of the most recent Census data.  In many cases, survey estimates for the population of any individual town in Connecticut will be similar to other towns within its Five Connecticuts grouping.

The original classification system for the Five Connecticuts was developed in: Levy, Don, Orlando Rodriguez, and Wayne Villemez. 2004. The Changing Demographics of Connecticut – 1990 to 2000. OP 2004-01.  For the 2015 Community Wellbeing Survey, the classification system was updated for DataHaven by Don Levy using 2010 Census data. The 2018 Community Wellbeing Survey uses the same classification system.

“This report, [prepared for CT Office of Health Strategy], accompanies the release of the Connecticut Self-Sufficiency Standard for 2019. It offers detailed data and analysis to help shape policies in Connecticut that support families. These data are also the building blocks of a new Connecticut HealthCare Affordability Standard that will be released in 2020.”

“The report addresses several questions:

• How many individuals and families in Connecticut are working, yet are unable to meet their basic needs?
• Where do people with inadequate income live and what are the characteristics of their households?
• What are the education and employment patterns among those with inadequate income?

We find that Connecticut families struggling to make ends meet are neither a small nor a marginal group, but rather represent a substantial proportion of the state. Those struggling to make ends meet in Connecticut include individuals and married couples with children, households in which adults work full time, and people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds.”

The Five Connecticuts (5CT) are a classification system, originally developed in 2004 by Don Levy, Orlando Rodriguez, and Wayne Villemez, to allow better comparisons across Connecticut’s geographical areas.

Using statistical methods, the 169 towns of Connecticut are grouped into one of five categories based on analysis of demographic variables.

The Five Connecticuts (5CT) were updated by Don Levy and DataHaven in 2015, using 2010 census data. The updated (2010) classifications are provided in the attached file on this page.

When looking at social or demographic data, conditions in a town are often similar to the average of the towns within its 5CT group. Given the small size of some Connecticut towns, this makes the classification system especially useful in cases where reliable data are not available for individual towns.
